Double chocolate and orange cookies

These thick and chewy double chocolate cookies have a subtle orange flavour.

Double chocolate orange cookies

These Double Chocolate Orange cookies are inspired by Terry's Orange chocolate. When I search for chocolate orange cookie recipes, most are orange shortbread cookies dipped in dark chocolate. Why can't we make chocolate orange cookies that have the texture of a chocolate chip cookie? The kind that are thick, chewy, and buttery! So here you have it.

This Double Chocolate Orange cookie is made with my classic cookie dough base, filled with two types of chocolate, orange extract, and zest to give the perfect balanced orange chocolate flavor. The cookies are then topped with melted dark chocolate, flaky salt, and a little bit of orange zest to give it some color. The best part? You don't need to let the dough chill. The cookies can be baked right away!

Double Chocolate Orange cookies

  • 3/4 cup butter, unsalted, melted (170g)

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar (200g)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp orange extract

  • 2 1/4 cup all purpose flour (270g)

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (25g)

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 2 cups chocolate chips

  • optional:1 bar orange flavoured chocolate, chopped (like Lindt or Terry's)

For the topping:
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

  • Zest of one orange

  • Flakey salt, to garnish

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, add melted butter and brown sugar. Mix well.

  3. Add in egg and orange extract. Stir to combine.

  4. Mix in flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Mix until just combined and a dough comes together.

  5. Add in chocolate chips and chopped orange chocolate bar.

  6. Scoop cookies using a large sized cookie scoop onto the parchment lined sheet, keeping 3 inches between each cookie.

  7. Bake at 350F for approximately 12 minutes or until the tops of the cookie are set.

  8. Once cookies are down, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool.

  9. In the meantime, melt dark chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and then microwave for another 30 seconds until the chocolate is melted.

  10. Using a spoon, drizzle the chocolate over the cookies.

  11. Zest the orange on top of the cookies. The orange zest will fall onto the melted chocolate, and set once cooled.

  12. Sprinkle with flakey salt.

  13. Allow the cookies and chocolate to cool before enjoying!
